ing Complexity for Design Planning David Wynn, Claudia Eckert and P John Clarkson Engineering Design Centre, Engineering Department, Trumpington St, Cambridge, UK. http://www-edc.eng.cam.ac.uk/people/dcw24 Abstract: This short paper is based on research carried out during an eight month case study at a large UK aerospace company. The focus of the study was to develop a more effective technique for planning the complex design processes found in the company, in order to support the development of more detailed and more accurate schedules. The paper outlines some key findings of this research, concluding with an important challenge for future work: once an appropriate level of abstraction has been identified for modelling complex design plans, how can the distributed, subjective planning knowledge be synthesized to form a coherent perspective? Orchestrating Task Planning in Writing: The Impact of Pre-Task Planning and Within-Task Planning on Fluency, Accuracy, and Complexity of Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing

Building on Robinson’s (2001, 2003) Cognition Hypothesis, Skehan’s (1998) Limited Attentional Capacity Model, and Kellog’s (1986) model of writing, this study examined the effect of task planning on the fluency, accuracy, and complexity of 60 Iranian EFL learners’ argumentative and narrative writings under different planning conditions. A quasi-experimental design with three levels of planning ...

Abstracting Probabilistic Actions

Abstracting Probabilistic Actions Peter Haddawy AnHai Doan Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee PO Box 784 Milwaukee, WI 53201 fhaddawy, [email protected] Abstract This paper discusses the problem of abstracting conditional probabilistic actions. We identify two distinct types of abstraction: intra-action abstraction and inter-action abstra...

Exclusionary Decision Making in Tehran Metropolitan Region- Complexity, Self organization and Power of Action

Viewing urban areas as webs of complex, interwoven networks, this article aims to analyze the decision-making process and its outcomes in Tehran metropolitan region. To do so, first the theoretical basis of complexity in urban life and its implications for planning have been reviewed. Using the main notion of power of action i.e. agency, and through creating the network of actors and their rela...

A Case for Complexity Models in Network Design and Management

Anecdotal evidence and intuition suggest that an operator’s ability to manage a network decreases as the network becomes more complex. However, there is currently no way to systematically quantify how complex a network’s design is nor how complexity may impact network management activities. In this paper, we develop a suite of complexity models that describe the routing design and configuration...

The Effect of Training and Task-Planning on the Complexity of Iranian Learners’ Oral Speech

The shift of emphasis away from written to oral skills has stimulated an incipient concern in second language research to investigate ways of helping second and foreign language learners achieve higher degrees of oral proficiency. Priority solely taken over accuracy, complexity, or fluency of speech might be justifiable with regard to the context in which learning takes place.  Accuracy and com...
